Dr. Jiangshan Yu (于江山)
I'm an Associate Professor at the School of Computer Science, University of Sydney, serving as the Director of the Sydney Blockchain Centre and the Director of External Engagement & Outreach. I'm the Australian Representative for International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Technical Committee 10 on Computer Systems Technology, an elected member of the IFIP Working Group 10.4 on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance. I'm a Fellow of the ACS (Australian Computer Society).
I'm a recipient of multiple awards recognising my research contributions, including the IEEE/IFIP Rising Star in Dependability Award (2026), ACS Fellowship (2025), IEEE TEMS Technical Achievement Award (2024), ARC DECRA Fellowship (2021), IBM Academic Award (2020), and several Best Paper Awards, among others. I have served as Chief Investigator on research projects totaling over AUD 10 million. I serve on the program committees of top-tier dependability and blockchain conferences, including ACM CCS, USENIX Security, USENIX ATC, VLDB, DSN, ICDCS, FC, and AFT. Additionally, I am an Associate Editor for journals including ACM Distributed Ledger Technologies (ACM DLT).
My research addresses real-world challenges in building practical systems that prioritise dependability, trust, security, privacy, and scalability. I design robust, high-performance digital infrastructures by leveraging dependable computing, decentralised systems, cryptography, and security protocols.
My research has advanced the resilience and performance of blockchain systems and services, with findings adopted by major blockchains such as Ethereum, Monero, Solana, Nervos, and NEO. I have also developed security protocols adopted by exchanges and wallet services to better protect their user assets. Beyond industry impact, my work has supported governments in advancing digital transformation and cybercrime investigations, contributing to research-informed policy-making in practice.
